Dearest friends in life and the struggle,
We need your help. Most of you know we've been working on a documentary for the past three years, in which we have been following the amazing and inspirational work of four transgender women who are working for social and economic justice in the U.S. To read more about the project visit the (in progress) website: http://www.transfemthemovie.
The culmination of the film will be taking place this summer in Chicago. The women in our film will come together for a trans Youth Empowerment Summit (Y.E.S.), at Columbia College on July 17th, 2010. Y.E.S. will empower 30-40 of the next generation of young transfeminine activists.
In order for an event of this magnitude to happen, and happen right, we need to raise a considerable amount of money. Through the unyielding support of the Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Media and Arts, Columbia College has donated a space to hold the event. Centrally located in downtown Chicago, the space is accessible from all locales within the city. In order to encourage participation, regardless of economic challenges young transwomen face, we will be providing free CTA passes, and meals for the duration of Y.E.S. Food and transportation are not cheap and so we need your help to ensure that we can deliver these goods.
Over the past three years we have raised over $25,000 to make this film and we are so close to completing it! Y.E.S is the last piece of the filming puzzle, after which we will go into postproduction, completing the film by the end of 2010. We need to raise an additional $10,000 to finish the film properly and make it readily available for our communities to use in the fight for social and economic justice.
If you are interested in donating to the porject, please either visit Paypal (via the link above) to make a non-tax-deductible donation or visit our website to download our fundraising packet, along with the paperwork needed to make a tax-deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor, Women Make Movies. We encourage you to pass this information along to others who might be interested in supporting the project, and of course we hope that - if you are able - you will donate to the film. No amount is too small, REALLY (a $7 donation buys one more CTA pass for a young person to attend Y.E.S!).
